Hazel Mackin Community Library

Weekly Highlights for November 6, 2017

It is time for an update on the library funding.  I know many of you voiced concerns over the budget cuts and I appreciate your outpouring support of our community library!  It really provided affirmation to our programs and services that we currently provide.  I want to clear up the unfortunate rumor that the library doors were possibly going to be closed because of budget cuts.  That information was completely false and was never stated as such.  I have no idea how it started, but I was shocked when I was informed that people thought it was a possibility.  With that said, the Village funding for the library will continue as last year.  Please know that isn’t the case for all departments.

This library belongs to the community and even though I have a library board and a village board, my job is to listen and assess what our patrons are needing whether it be in our collection development, our services, our hours, our customer service and our programs. In order to do that well, I need to gage what I hear and make priorities where they are needed.  I have my work cut out for me as I look toward 2018.  There will be tough decisions to be made, but I know that together we will rise up to the challenge of keeping our library as a beacon of Roberts.

Story Time: Every Monday and Wednesday, 10:30-11:15 am. November 6th and 8th will be Scarecrows, November 13th and 15th will be pumpkins, November 20th and 22nd will be Thanksgiving, November 27th and 29th will be Ponds.

Card Making Workshop: Thursday, November 9th, 6-8 pm. This is a make and take class! Materials will be supplied for you to create beautiful homemade cards.  Light appetizers will be provided. Please call the library to register because this class is filling up fast.

Lego Club: Saturday, November 11, 10:30-11:30 am.

S.T.E.M.: Monday, November 13th, 4:30-5:30 pm.  Please call the library to register your 4th-7th grade student.

Job Center: Wednesday, November 15th 10-12 pm.  If you are looking for a new job, this is a great opportunity to get one-on-one counsel in employment opportunities, resumes, interview skills and much more.  We recently had a patron use this service and he was amazed at the helped he received and how applicable it was.

Tween Book Club: Saturday, November 18th, 10-11 am

Teen Book Club: Saturday, November 18th, 11:30-1 pm

Paws to Read: Thursday, November 30th, 3:30-5:30 pm.  We are excited to have Julie Peterson and her therapy dog, Ole back to the library.  This program is designed to help children with reading anxiety or difficulty to have a safe connection with a trained therapy dog as they read out loud.  This experience can provide confidence and build reading skills. No sign up required.  Just bring your favorite book to share with Ole!

Stitching Group: Meets at the library every Wednesday, 12:30-3 pm.

Crocheting and Knitting Group:  Meets every Thursday, 2:15-5 pm.

Senior Coffee and Cookies/Ice Cream: Every Friday at 10AM, Stop by for some conversation, games, or just a free cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Every week is a different game except the first Friday of each month is Bingo.  Some people come for the entire time and play games and others come just for a treat and some good conversations.

Strong Senior Chair Exercise: This program is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2PM. Come on in and join the movement group! This program will follow a DVD designed to help develop strength and enhance ability to function in daily live, improving stability, balance, and mobility. Feel free to bring small hand weights for a tougher workout.

A special thank you to Ted Schieffer (in honor of Lois Hall) and the Nike Neighbors for their donations to the parking lot.

The parking lot fundraiser is ongoing and the Library Board is currently working toward raising $83,253 to pay off the extended lot and prepare the way for pavement. Your gift would help us provide safe parking for those who attend our growing programs.
