Weekly Highlights for September 18, 2017

Fall is a great time to get reacquainted with reading.  The temperatures are dropping and schedules are in back in session.  We have three monthly book clubs that are great ways to get that reading in.  Tween Book Club is for grades 4th-7th, Teen Book Club is for grades 8th-12th and A Novel Idea Book Club for adults.   Book Clubs provide a way to meet new people and discuss all kinds of books!  It’s always stimulating conversation when people have different views and perspectives because of one’s life experiences which causes each of us to interpret what an author is doing in the writing and depth of a book.

I really love the book club because it has forced me to read some titles that are typically out of my comfort zone or genre.  This month the group is discussing, The View from Mount Joy by Lorna Landvik on September 25th, 5:30 pm at Bobtown Brewhouse.  I’m not only excited to discuss the book (yes, I already finished it!), but even more excited that the author will be here in October for everyone to meet.

Story Time: Every Monday and Wednesday, 10:30-11:15 am.  September 25 we will not have story time because on September 27th story time will be held at Warren Town Park (weather permitting). October 2nd and 4th will be Dinosaurs, October 9th and 11th will be Fire Prevention.

A Novel Idea Book Club: Monday, September 25th, 5:30 pm.  This month’s selection will be The View from Mount Joy by Lorna Landvik.

Tween Book Club: Saturday, September 30th 10-11 am. This month the group will be discussing Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas by Jonathan W. Stokes.

Twelve-year-old Addison Cooke just wishes something exciting would happen to him. His aunt and uncle, both world-famous researchers, travel to the ends of the earth searching for hidden treasure, dodging dangerous robbers along the way, while Addison is stuck in school all day.

Luckily for Addison, adventure has a way of finding the Cookes. After his uncle unearths the first ancient Incan clue needed to find a vast trove of lost treasure, he is kidnapped by members of a shadowy organization intent on stealing the riches. Addison’s uncle is the bandits’ key to deciphering the ancient clues and looting the treasure . . . unless Addison and his friends can outsmart the kidnappers and crack the code first. So it’s off to South America, where the excitement, danger, gold, booby traps, and car chases are never-ending!

Full of laugh-out-loud moments and nonstop action, and perfect for fans of Indiana Jones or James Patterson’s Treasure Hunters series, Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas is sure to strike gold with kid readers.

Author Event on October 10, 6:30 pm will feature, Lorna Landvik. Lorna has written over 10 books and currently resides in Minnesota.  “Revisiting the characters in her best-selling Patty Jane's House of Curl, Lorna Landvik offers a story brimming with life, humor and hope. With her trademark wit and warmth, Lorna follows Nora Rolvaag (the do-or-die-trying daughter of Patty Jane) and a cast of characters between city and wooded retreat, Minnesota and Norway, a past that's secret and a future that's promising, but uncertain. Readers are in for a rollicking good time with characters whose strengths, foibles, and choices will have you laughing and crying.”-702WI. Join us for a night of laughter and comedy as you hear the insights to this endearing author.

Teen Book Club: Saturday, October 14th, 11:30-1 pm.  Note the date and time change.  Brittany is trying to meet the needs of the students with their hectic schedules!  This month they will be discussing, Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies by Lindsay Ribar.

Aspen Quick has never really worried about how he's affecting people when he steals from them. But this summer he'll discover just how strong the Quick family magic is--and how far they'll go to keep their secrets safe. With a smart, arrogant protagonist, a sinister family tradition, and an ending you won't see coming, this is a fast-paced, twisty story about power, addiction, and deciding what kind of person you want to be, in a family that has the ability to control everything you are.

* "Fast-paced and unpredictable, the plot seamlessly balances a summer romance with well-crafted paranormal suspense. A fresh and substantive story about family, love, and deciding who you want to be in the world."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review
