Hazel Mackin Community Library

Weekly Highlights for August 14, 2017

We are always looking for ways to partner with great programs that will provide people in our community with educational and social growth and learning.  This will be our second year to partner with The Family Resource Center of Baldwin to provide Play & Learn in Roberts.

Play & Learn provides an opportunity for toddlers and preschoolers to interact with their parents and other children ages 1-5. Parents can also discuss parenting strategies, dilemmas, and everyday happenings with a Parent Educator and other parents going through similar situations. All groups include parent-child play, parent discussion topic, children’s activity, snack and story. No cost to participate.

The fall session of Play & Learn at Hazel Mackin Community Library will be held on Tuesdays from 10-11:30 a.m., September 12 through November 14. For more information visit www.frcscv.org.  To register, call Family Resource Center St. Croix Valley at 715-684-4440 beginning Monday, August 28 at 9 a.m.

Monday Movie Matinee:  August 14th is Boss Baby, PG, August 21st is Smurfs: The Lost Village, PG, August 28th is Brittany’s PickJ. Popcorn is provided.

Open Play Doh: Wednesday, August 16th 10-2 pm.  This is one of my favorite sensory projects.  I have a sweet little girl who thinks when my office door is shut that I must be having my play doh time and don’t want to be interrupted!

Teen Book Club: Thursday, August 17th, 6-7:30 pm. This month the group will be discussing The Valiant by Lesley Livingston.  Author Lesley Livingston has created a compelling heroine and placed her in the vivid backdrops of ancient Britain and Rome. Action and suspense keep The Valiant's pages turning, with a few unexpected twists and turns along the way. Fallon is easy to relate to as she struggles to understand her new reality on the way to emotional maturity. She's also a great role model for strong, fierce women unafraid to lay it all out on the line. Light on the romance, it's best for mature tweens and up who like a healthy mix of swordplay, battle action, intrigue, and historical settings.

Tween Book Club: Saturday, August 19th, 10-11 am. Seventh Grade Life in Tights by Brooks Benjamin. - All Dillon wants is to be a real dancer. And if he wins a summer scholarship at Dance-Splosion, he’s on his way. The problem? His dad wants him to play football. And Dillon’s freestyle crew, the Dizzee Freekz, says that dance studios are for sellouts. His friends want Dillon to kill it at the audition—so he can turn around and tell the studio just how wrong their rules and creativity-strangling ways are. WORK IT. At first, Dillon’s willing to go along with his crew’s plan, even convincing one of the snobbiest girls at school to work with him on his technique. But as Dillon’s dancing improves, he wonders: what if studios aren’t the enemy? And what if he actually has a shot at winning the scholarship? BRING IT.

Lego Club: Saturday, August 26, 10:30-11:30am.

Whitetail Deer Seminar: Saturday, September 9th, 12:30 pm.  Living in WI means that if you aren’t a deer hunter, you probably live with one or you know many who are.  This seminar is something you won’t want to miss!!  Fred, Abbas, nationally recognized authority on whitetail deer will sharing “Mock Scrapes, the Deadliest Tactic of All.”  Call the library to reserve your spot.  A light lunch will be provided.

Senior Coffee and Cookies/Ice Cream: Every Friday at 10AM, Stop by for some conversation, games, or just a free cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Every week is a different game except the first Friday of each month is Bingo.  Some people come for the entire time and play games and others come just for a treat and some good conversations.

Strong Senior Chair Exercise: This program is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2PM. Come on in and join the movement group! This program will follow a DVD designed to help develop strength and enhance ability to function in daily live, improving stability, balance, and mobility. Feel free to bring small hand weights for a tougher workout.

The parking lot fundraiser is ongoing and the Library Board is currently working toward raising $83,253 to pay off the extended lot and prepare the way for pavement. Your gift would help us provide safe parking for those who attend our growing programs.
